Having An Old Website Can Hurt Your Business

Is Your Organization’s Website Actually Hurting Your Business?

It’s possible.

And it’s actually extremely likely if your website is older.

Why?

Mobile Friendly Website Design

Chances are, if your website was built even just a few years ago, it may NOT be mobile friendly. What does that mean? In a nutshell, a non-mobile friendly is not optimized for viewing on smaller devices such as smart phones and tablets. In turn, this can lead to a poor user experience, and a decrease in customer engagement and conversion rates. And with the increase of people who primarily use mobile devices to surf the internet and search for providers, services and products, this can mean missed opportunities for your business. Worse, it could mean driving more business to your competition.

Why?

Well, if a prospective customer or client is searching for services and products that you offer, and they land on your website, only to be frustrated with the experience (for example, the text is so small that they can’t easily read it, or images are bleeding off the visible content area of the page, etc.) they may “bounce” and head to your competitor.

And that is no kind of good.

Mobile First Indexing

Starting in March of 2018, Google initiated their Mobile First Indexing initiative. That means Google may evaluate and index your website’s content based on the mobile version of your website, rather than the desktop version.

Google’s reasoning for this is that they want to increase every user’s experience (which makes total sense). So this change is important for every website owner. But it can be detrimental for business owners who do not have a mobile friendly website.

So now, not only can the actual user experience suffer, having a website that is not mobile friendly can affect how Google “views” or interprets it.

“Do I NEED A Mobile Friendly Website?”

YES!

No beating around the bush here. :)

Now more than ever, your website needs to be mobile friendly. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Whether you want Google to accurately index your site’s content and rank your website organically, or you just want your site’s visitors to stay engaged and not run off to your competitors, having a mobile friendly website is imperative.

If you are about to build a new website, make sure it’s mobile friendly.

If you have a website, and it’s not mobile friendly, contact your current website development partner (if you like them) and have a discussion. If you don’t like them, find another reputable website developer in your area.

Take The Mobile Friendly Test!

Checking to see if your website is mobile friendly is SUPER simple! Just head on over to Google’s Mobile Friendly Test page, input your website’s URL, hit “Run Test” and see what it says.

You may actually have a mobile friendly website, but it’s not rendering properly for Google. That probably means there are some coding errors that need to be addressed. Typically, these can be fixed and after clearing the site’s cache, you may get a positive result.

Or, you may find out the website is NOT mobile friendly, and that means you need to make a decision. We definitely do NOT recommend investing additional dollars into a website that is not mobile friendly, especially if you are about to start a search engine optimization campaign – since you most likely will not get full benefits from optimizing a site that is not mobile friendly. Consider this an opportunity to take stock in your company’s online presence, and look at options for a better functioning website that invites viewers to engage with your brand, instead of getting frustrated with their experience.
